Warning signs of a scam lender
Upfront fees
Legitimate lenders do not ask for upfront fees before disbursing a loan. If you are asked to pay a "processing fee" or "insurance deposit" before receiving your loan, it is likely a scam.
Pressure to act quickly
Scammers create urgency to prevent you from thinking clearly. A real lender gives you time to review terms and ask questions.
No physical address or registration
Legitimate microlenders are registered with NAMFISA and have verifiable contact details.
Too-good-to-be-true rates
Extremely low interest rates with no income verification or credit checks are a red flag.
Requests for personal banking PINs
No legitimate lender will ever ask for your banking PIN, internet banking password, or one-time login codes (OTP).
Communication from personal accounts
Be wary if someone contacts you from a personal email or WhatsApp number claiming to represent a lending institution.
How to report a scam
If you believe you have been targeted by a scam lender or have fallen victim to fraud:
- Stop all communication with the suspected scammer immediately.
- Do not send any further money or personal information.
- Report the incident to the Namibian Police (NAMPOL) at your nearest station.
- Notify your bank immediately if you shared any banking details.
Remember
- Cheapa Loans will never ask for upfront fees.
- We will never ask for your banking PIN or password.
